Many From the Few |

I believe most pigeon fanciers breed from too many pairs. It is common for a breeder to keep eight or ten pair and to raise 4 to 6 young from each pair in the Spring. That’s 40 to 60 babies. Usually, there are only 2 to 4 pair of really good breeders and the others are average or below average. My strategy is to breed 8 to 12 babies a year from my best 3 or 4 pair and use the other pairs as foster parents. That way I get 40 to 60 really good babies from only my best breeders. This produces a higher percentage of top quality young ones. I usually breed my best cocks to two different hens each year so the hens don’t get worn out. |
