Principles of Loft Management |

|
If you don’t know the basic principles of loft management you can’t keep your birds healthy all year round. If you can’t keep your birds in peak health you will frequently experience setbacks and success will be difficult. Basic loft management is not really difficult. Most important, don’t overcrowd your birds. You can feed twice a day or keep a feeder in the loft but food should never get on the floor or be allowed to get soiled or wet. Water should always be fresh and clean. If you would not drink your pigeon’s water you shouldn’t expect them to. Your nest boxes should be a little on the large size and you should always have more perches than birds. Worm your birds at least twice a year. Dust them for lice, mites, and pigeon flies or spray the perches for lice and mites or hang a no pest strip in the loft. YOUR BIRDS SHOULD NOT HAVE LICE, MITES, OR PIGEON FLIES. It’s a good idea to treat your flock with a broad spectrum antibiotic once or twice a year and also treat for canker and coccidiosis once a year. I have found this especially necessary for keeping my birds healthy since I breed all year round. Make sure your loft is clean and dry. It’s not good to overcrowd your birds.
